Here in westvirgina we have some of the best wood's to use, black- Walnut , wild- black cherry. sasafrass, hard 'curly maple, and it is all local. We have many friends that bring us lumber, and say 'will this board, make a good instrument?' most of them are music makers too, and enjoy what we do. someone is in the shop every day watching or we are picking that good ol mountain music. or we let them clean the shop,
Behind the Scenes of hall & son's
We are trying new things to get a better sounding instrument. We are using paua shell , Mother of pearl, as well as walnut, and maple for inlay, we hand draft our soundholes and make our one stencels. NO two insturments are alike. My youngest luthier is 11-yrs old. He helps with the lumber, and glue-up , and is well on the way to learning the trade. My oldest son is 17-yrs old and has many projects under him. and I am old as dirt//. and been doing this for many years. So Keep looking for what we may come up with next
